The dust protection breaks in after the years and then no longer protects the ball joint properly. Like every rubber and plastic part on the vehicle, the wrinkle balls / cuffs are also porous. In order to avoid consequential damage, an early and on both sides of the cuffs are recommended. If this does not happen, moisture and dirt can damage the ball joint.
